SUDAN: Drones Could Turn the Tide in Sudan’s Civil War

There was reported massacre of civilians at a hospital in the Sudanese city of El-Fasher in the northern region of Darfur, last Friday December 13. According to the Doha-based Arabic network Aljazeera, the Sudanese Health Ministry blamed the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Officials indicated the paramilitary group released a Drone strike towards the only remaining health facility in the city, that resulted in nine fatalities, while 20 other people were reported injured.

Relief workers in El- Fasher indicated the attacked was targeted at the Saudi-run hospital forcing it to suspend operations. The Sudanese army and the RSF have been engaged in fighting in E-Fasher since May of this year. The city is said to be the epicenter of humanitarian activities by the United Nations and other international NGOs.

Amidst the escalating conflict, Doctors without borders has reported that cholera outbreak is on the rise with close to a thousand cases reported over the past couple of weeks alone. Malakal, the city of South Sudan’s Upper Nile state is said to be the most affected. According to Doctors without borders, the bacterial disease is now spreading to neighboring towns such as Tonga and Kodok Cholera is known to be an acute form of diarrhea, and the unsanitary conditions in war-ravaged areas and displaced camps in and around the city could be a potential source of the outbreak.
